Practical Guide to Effective Leadership for School Managers Essay
Practical Guide to Effective Leadership for School Managers - Essay Example One of the benefits that such a practical guide has is with relation to its ability to highlight key issues and problem areas that will likely remain for the duration of time in which the practical guide itself will be utilized. In such a way, a level of self analysis is needed to be performed that that once a task or approach has been completed, a level of inference can be drawn with regards to those areas that could be improved upon as well as noting and further improving those areas that proved to be key successes within the process (Avant, 2010). As a means of this, the following analysis will seek to provide a level of discussion onto the key areas in which the skills that will be noted developed as a function of individual growth as well as teamwork. Furthermore, the mistakes and difficulties that are doubtless to be experienced will also be discussed as a means of seeking to find ways in which personal and professional development can be promoted to a higher degree within the individual school of the current time as well as the future. Although an exhaustive study of these personal and professional factors would require a dissertation length response, this brief analysis will seek to hone in on three unique skills which can be developed through the course of everyday activities and seek to utilize these as a starting point for related difficulties and weaknesses that proved to be key roadblocks, although not insurmountable, in the process (Wilson, 1992). A primary skill that must be developed and leveraged at each and every stage is with regards to ensuring that lines of communication remain upon and healthy. Without this fundamental aspect, it is impossible for the flow of information to allow for a type of self-correcting entity to form that is capable of responding to threats and opportunities (Beccera & Gupta, 2003). Like any other institution/organization, it is the requirement of the educational organization to ensure that effective forms of commun ication be maintained and leveraged at each and every stage so that the entity can continue to express a degree of growth and development that is befitting of the times and demands upon which the environment consists (Elida-Tomita, 2010). Similarly, another key strength that must be sought to be engaged in order for effective communication to take place on any level is the ability of leadership to be able to interact with and gauge the needs that the organization puts forward; almost invariably accomplished via the process of self analysis and introspective means of measurement.

Analysis of the Road Not Taken by Robert Frost Essay Example for Free
Analysis of the Road Not Taken by Robert Frost Essay The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost shows the narrator coming to a fork in the wood, which offers two paths to take. By use of symbolism and various verb tenses in different stanzas the author was able to convey the overall meaning of the poem. The narrator scrutinized the road but does not find a noticeable difference in the two paths and thus was stuck deciding whether which road is the better decision. However, in the fourth stanza, by the allegory ââ¬Å"I took the one less traveled byâ⬠shows that the narrator wishes to take the path which leads to individualism. The narrator portrayed that in life there are decisions we must make that must be based on our own agenda. Symbols also play in defining the meaning of the poem. The symbol of the color yellow is use to show more than just the narratorââ¬â¢s cowardice, but also yellow represents autumn meaning the author is at the end of his life which indicates that he has wasted his whole life in indecision. Other symbols such as ââ¬Å"two roadsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"one travelerâ⬠in the first stanza show the idea of free choice and individualism of the narrator. We can also tie in to the fact that because the roads lies in the woods, and that roads represents free choice, the overall idea would be comparable to free choice and fate. You are free to choose what choice to make but in the end the choices you make are still a part of your fate. In the first three stanzas the poem is written in past tense, but in the fourth stanza the poem is written in future tense. By repeating ââ¬Å"two roads diverged in a woodâ⬠in the fourth stanza the narrator is implying that he is reflecting upon if the choice he had made was the better of the two choices. The first three stanzas of the poem being in past tense hints that he is looking back at his past, but the fourth stanza shows us the narrator is hoping ââ¬Å"somewhere ages and ages henceâ⬠the decision he made will benefit him. In addition, because the narrator is still uncertain if the choice he made was the better of the two, we can concludes that he is still reflective on whether which road he should have took, hence the title ââ¬Å"The Road Not Taken. â⬠Partially, the poem tells us about the narratorââ¬â¢s fear of regrets which eventually leads to his indecisiveness in choice of what road to travel. The fear of making mistakes from either choice had excluded the narrator from taking any action. . Frostââ¬â¢s point is to acknowledge the fact that in life there are choices where uncertainty makes choosing difficult, and often we are paralyzed by the fact of making the ââ¬Å"wrong choice. â⬠Words such as ââ¬Å"sorry,â⬠ââ¬Å"sigh,â⬠and ââ¬Å"doubtedâ⬠shows the authors regrets and concern for making the wrong choice. The last stanza offered the authorââ¬â¢s apprehension furthermore of whether which road he should take with the stuttered ââ¬Å"I. â⬠Although in the last two lines the narrator says he takes ââ¬Å"the [road] less traveled by, and that has made all the difference,â⬠the use of the word difference is ironic to what the poem has states in retrospective about the similarity of the roads. In the poem The Road Not Taken the narratorââ¬â¢s idea of non-conformity coupled with the fear of regrets from making the wrong choice apprehended him from making any decisions. The Road Not Taken shows us that the choices we make in life should be based on our individual values.

milan music :: essays research papers
Objective description: The music is so abstract, itââ¬â¢s almost as if some people just got together randomly and decided to make some noise. Itââ¬â¢s sometimes calming and sometimes stressful. Itââ¬â¢s like a call and response music, one section makes a noise and the other sections respond accordingly with a similar sounding rhythm, very interesting to listen to. Steel drums, chimes, drums, drones, flutes, and some other instruments, not even sure what the names are. I have heard them before but do not know the name. There are different types of steel drums giving out different pitches and resonations. This music is just so abstract and unlike music today. No music I listen to can compare to this type of abstract material. The most prominent thing to me in this music is the rhythm. Itââ¬â¢s not a mono rhythm; itââ¬â¢s more of an ever-changing rhythm which makes me try to pick up a new one every change of the call and response. I hear a very polyphony texture with man y different instruments playing at once or responding to each others calls. The piece does not use repetition as songs do today but the way they come back to the main rhythm is somewhat of a repeat. They just call out a rhythm and then someone tries to repeat it. This music is awkward to listen to at first but the second or third song I got really used to the abstract interactions the different instruments had with each other. Functional description: Gamelan music is a way of making social groups. Gamelan music is performed as a group effort, and so there is no place for an individual showoff. Traditionally, gamelan is only played at certain occasions such as ritual ceremonies, special community celebrations, shadow puppet shows, and for the royal family. Gamelan is also used to accompany dances in court, temple, and village rituals. Besides providing music for social functional ceremonies, gamelan also provides a livelihood for many professional musicians, and for specialized craftsmen who manufacture gamelan. I took a class at Sonoma and was somewhat familiar with this type or music but before that I had no prior experience with the music. The music grew on me over time and became less awkward. Its not something I would choose to listen to but itââ¬â¢s a good sense of what music around the world has to offer those of us in the United states that are not open-minded to other cultures music.

Ludwig van Beethoven and Robert Schumann
Ludwig van Beethoven faced hearing problems which he noticed at about age 26. He accepted at age 32 that he would possibly become completely deaf. He tried to suppress the problem by using headphones though by age 50, he could hardly hear any sound. This however did not deter him from writing his 9th and final symphony (Hosler, 2009).His career was badly affected as he surged into depression and became embarrassed that he would lose his auditory sense though he was a composer. Both the music of the romantic period and other art forms of the period focused on bringing out the expression of intense feelings and emotions. Both aspects were ruled by the depiction of beauty, strangeness and sublimity. Both music types are nourished by and closely linked to other forms of art such as poetry and drama. Classical music is dominated by the aspect of sound building and universality whereas romantic music is predominated by sound feeling and individualism. Ideals of order, control and equilibriu m are associated with classical music while romanticism is deep in passion, movement, fantasy and imagination. Question 2 (Robert Schumann)Robert Schumann intensified his composition after marrying Clara who led him into orchestral music and chamber works in an effort to expand his style. As a result, his love for the piano facilitated a good combination with symphonic orchestration which enabled him to produce the ââ¬Å"Piano Concerto in A Minorâ⬠. Robert had seven children with Clara and this created a new dimension of composition in that they started composing songs for children and those about children such as ââ¬Å"Child Falling Asleepâ⬠(Schneider, 2002).Johannes Brahms is the composer of the famous Intermezzo and Cantata Rinaldo in addition to his first published work on sonata in C major. Fredric Chopin is the composer of the famous Revolutionary Etude and Opus in addition to writing about lovers who part in his popular Les Adieux (library. thinkquest. org, n. d) . Richard Wagner wrote about ten operas which are today regularly performed in opera houses. He also invented the leitmotiv which is a form of signature tune for events, persons, physical objects and emotions. The orchestra pit and orchestration invented by Richard brought new aspects in the sound properties of the theatre. Composers and other music professionals have gained a lot of knowledge and have been inspired by the harmony, melodic structure and the great orchestration present in Wagnerââ¬â¢s inventions. The inventions have been a source of dynamism in the world of music (Roy, n. d). References Hosler, H. (2009). Medical Mystery Behind Beethoven. Public and Private Sector Collaborations Essay
Open research organizations and private firms work under very diverse situations and with poles a-part aims and objectives, which result in fairly different outcomes in the two types of organizations. Public researchers are mainly ambitious due to their willingness to expand knowledge and publish them in journals and magazines to help for the cause of bringing it to knowledge of the masses. On the other hand, private firms and ventures aim to achieve higher profits through commercially valid information that the firm builds up or obtain to be kept in the boundaries of the company and far away from opponents in the market or the industry. This usually results in the conflicts among the two forms of organizations and it is difficult to work in collaboration between the public and private organizations. But it has also been evident from the past that, private companies and firms which have worked in public collaborations, although not many succeeded, but those who did, have been able to achieve goals and have set trends for other organizations to work for the cause of social development and enhancement of public systems for noble cause. Current Situation (LoJack) and Strategy: LoJack Corporation markets and authorizes the LoJack System, a unique, proprietary system used entirely by law enforcement workforce to track, establish, and pick up stolen motor vehicles. The problem of vehicle theft has escalated to an epidemic level an estimated to result in an yearly loss of approximately $8 billion. The LoJack System has an established track evidence of falling damages, striking public protection, and solving grave crimes related to motor vehicle thievery, all accomplished within the realistic restrictions of overburdened law enforcement structure.à Currently, LoJack has unique system designed to assist law enforcement in locating and tracking stole vehicles. Competition is fierce if viewed with Telemetric and GPS tracking devices. However, if we look at vehicle recovery systems, LoJack is the global leader with a law enforcement network that cannot be easily duplicated.à This law enforcement network is challenging politically and requires a high degree of local political assistance.à Financially, sales are climbing, but year over year growth is declining.à The distribution system through auto retailers seems stuck to new car sales. The LoJack strategy at the present time consists of several discrete variables.à LoJack has elected to expand into new geographic areas and markets which is a logical growth strategy for the firm which has established an enviable reputation in terms of asset recovery systems.à This company has developed a new tracking unit that permits it to move into new segments such as trailers while simultaneously reducing costs for such units, therefore, establishing itself as a cost leader in the sector.à à à This combined with a strong differentiation of product through law enforcement networks gives LoJack a strong competitive advantage.à These are strengths that cannot be quickly or easily duplicated and because of the proprietary technical aspect of this product.à Competitors would have to try and find substitute products to compete directly with LoJack. Competitive Environment New Entrants Teletrec and other competitors were on the market prior to LoJackââ¬â¢s entrance and other competitors are entering the market through GPS based systems such as ââ¬ËOnStarââ¬â¢.à These systems are not a onetime purchase but incur monthly fees to maintain service and may require the use of a cell phone. Substitutes Just as with GPS, there is a threat of substitute products coming on-line through new technology, but this threat should be mitigated by LoJackââ¬â¢s network with local law enforcement agencies. Suppliers Suppliers are also a threat as the auto industry is developing its own telematics technology.à The automakers have started relying on standards to speed up the plan cycle. Their incapability to bring state-of-the-art activity, communication, routing, and other ââ¬Å"telematicsâ⬠(navigation, driver-warning, and communication systems) evidently emphasize the manufacturersââ¬â¢ unwillingness to relying on these standards. The automakers came into view to have understood their errors and restrictions and are participating in the development of new network standards for both critical mission and convenience or entertainment systems. LoJack must continue to market its law enforcement advantage to thwart off this threat. Buyers At this stage, buyers have relatively limited buying power due to the lack of alternative technology. However, the threat is the heavy reliance on car dealers to sell the product.à If there is no incentive to do so, then the buyer may lack the knowledge that would drive the purchase. Intensity of Rivalry Although the product is in its growing stages, and there is no clear competition, the increased activity in this sector could be conducive of a threat to achieve a large enough market share to make the implementation worthwhile. Perspective on network level strategy Both LoJack and Micro Logic embrace the embedded organizational structure.à While they both have proprietary technology, they rely on other organizations to leverage these technologies.à LoJackââ¬â¢s technology would not have been possible without the alliance with local law enforcement agencies, Motorola, and Micro Logic.à Micro Logicââ¬â¢s existence had been to partner with organizations to influence its technological resourcefulness to additionally expand the companies that it works for.à It would take an evenhandedness stand in these companies and take a long term approach. In order for Micro Logic to be successful in this venture, it would need to rely on LoJackââ¬â¢s distribution and marketing systems. Not only to sell its products but also to ensure its own financial stability. If LoJack is to review its long term strategy, it must understand that research and development are not at the core of its operation.à Motorola is a key component to both LoJack and Micro Logic and has been a strong partner providing vital assistance. They cannot be relied on to only provide this technology to LoJack.à They are a much larger company and will look to broaden their reach.à In the fall of 1999 Motorola was already working to become a driving force in the telematics industry and moved to position itself with the major car companies. Recommendations Short Term LoJack should look to form a free alliance with Micro Logic. This would allow for LoJack to expand into the new market of construction equipment where need exist and no clear provider exist. An alliance between these two organizations has a proven track record and a proven product that can be marketed globally. The alliance should tackle the construction equipment market. This is a market that has a strong need for a location and asset management technology there is no clear market leader and creativity and innovation in products play a vital role to become a leader. The combination of LoJackââ¬â¢s proven solution for tracking and the ability of Micro Logic to develop strong asset management software would allow for strong penetration in this market. à Both organizations should look to work in their core areas of expertise. LoJack recognizes how to market and allocate the products and Micro Logic should right away assume the Research &Development purpose. This will allow both companies to continue to drive down cost. LoJack presently has sufficient cash on hand to assist the need for cash with Micro Logic.à At this point, the cash infusion should be done as a low or no interest loan to Micro Logic. The partnership works well over time, Micro Logic can establish if this is their core business.à If not, they will be able to sell this product back to LoJack just as it did the first time and move in a different direction or become a secondary firm to LoJack.à Motorola is currently working on the 3rd generation LoJack and Micro Logic sho uld work directly with Motorola on this function. Medium Term Once a clear hold on the construction market is protected, then the alliance will have the opportunity to move into the trailer market. A proven track record in auto recovery and construction equipment asset management will allow strong credibility and should allow LoJack and Micro Logic to become the market leaders. During this stage both firms will need to determine the structure of the company and if they are able to grow construction equipment sales to the same rate as existing auto sales then LoJack would be in a position to either absorb Metrologic into the existing organization or turn Micro Logic into a subsidiary. Long Term Emerging markets will be critical to the long term success of LoJack.à With a strong foothold on the construction market this area would be a logical first step into emerging markets as contraction equipment would usually surpass new car sales.à Immerging markets will provide the strongest revenue growths for the company and is possible this may need to be moved into the mid-term focus depending on the success for the technology.

Drivers essays
Drivers essays On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and approved the document that set us as Americans free, thus changing the world forever. Purpose The Declaration of Independence was a political instrument designed to achieve some very distinct purposes. One was to sever the relationship between the colonies and England. To show that the time for reconciliation has ended and there is a time when it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another...(Roark A-1) Another, factor hastening official independence was the prospect of an alliance with France, Britains archrival. France was willing to provide military supplies as well as naval power, but not without firm assurance the Americans would separate from England.(Roark 189) Thirdly, the declaration was used as a form of propaganda to unite the colonies as one, to rally the people for their independence. One sees this by looking at what happened the following weeks after the declaration was finished. Americans gathered, read aloud, and celebrated the great piece to writing. Jefferson and the rest of the delegates put the blame precisely on the king. As said in the video, The Declaration portrayed the king as a merciless tyrant(Declaring Independence). It does just that because at the time, Americans thought that the kings evil ministers had been giving the king bad advice (Declaring Independence). The Declaration accused the king of more then thirty different injustices done to the American people; this made them see who the enemy was and why they needed to become free. The charges to the king are very accurate. They edited out the issues, for example, blaming King George III for slavery. The charges against the king do justify the revolution. When looking at all the charges in history against Eng ...

Personality theories;Type and Trait essays
Personality theories;Type and Trait essays Before describing the major modern trait and type theories of personality the following key terms must be defined; trait, type and personality. A personality trait represents a continuous dimension and can be defined as a broad, stable and enduring characteristic which is used to explain behaviour (Phares Pervin The major modern trait and type theories of Gordon Allport, Raymond Cattell, Hans Eysenck and the Big Five vary in their approach and methods in their attempts to understand personality, yet all share the belief that personality can be understood and individual's behaviour could be explained and described by the use of types and traits. The trait and type personality psychologists used three methods in identifying important traits and types; the lexical approach, meaning the more important a word is the more often it will appear in language, the theoretical approach which focuses on the most significant dispositions and the statistical approach where extensive data is mathamatically analysed {Liebert and Spiegler, 1990) to support their theories outlined in this essay. Allport is considered to be the founder of the modern type and trait school. Allport with Odbert, became the first researchers to conducted a lexical study of personality descriptors {cited in Ewen, 1940} and develop a system to classify traits. From the results of this study, Allport developed a theory which divided traits into three groups with varying degrees of influence; cardinal traits, central traits and secondary dispositions, which make up an individuals personali...

MLA Referencing â⬠How to Cite a Book
MLA Referencing ââ¬â How to Cite a Book MLA Referencing ââ¬â How to Cite a Book MLA referencing, as developed by the Modern Language Association, is a way of citing sources in academic writing, commonly used within the liberal arts and humanities. Books, on the other hand, are papery things with pages that live in libraries. Theyââ¬â¢re usually full of words, sometimes with a few pictures. These things. You can put them on shelves, too. You probably knew that already, but we thought it was best to clarify. Now thatââ¬â¢s settled, in todayââ¬â¢s blog post, we explain how to reference a book with MLA citations, which is an essential skill if your college uses this referencing system. In-Text Citations MLA referencing uses parenthetical citations, but the format differs slightly from the ââ¬Å"authorââ¬âdateâ⬠system you might know if youââ¬â¢ve used APA or Harvard citations before. The only things you need to give in an MLA citation are the authorââ¬â¢s surname and the relevant page number(s) for the passage youââ¬â¢re referencing: Geographical latitude is a ââ¬Å"major determinantâ⬠of growing conditions (Diamond 189). If the author is named in the text, simply give page numbers after the relevant passage: According to Diamond, latitude is a ââ¬Å"major determinantâ⬠of growing conditions (189). When citing two books by the same author, moreover, youââ¬â¢ll need to differentiate between different sources. To do this in MLA, give a shortened title in the citation alongside the other information: According to Diamond, latitude is a ââ¬Å"major determinantâ⬠of growing conditions (Guns, Germs Steel 189). This effects how societies rise and fall (Diamond, Collapse 44-45). Note that thereââ¬â¢s a comma between the author name and shortened title when both are given in parentheses. You should also italicize book titles in citations, just in the main text. Reference List/ MLA referencing requires all cited sources to be added to a ââ¬Å"â⬠page at the end of your document. The information to include here for a print book is as follows: Surname, First Name. Title of Book. Publisher, Year of Publication. In the case of the book cited above, Guns, Germs Steel, this would appear as: Diamond, Jared. Guns, Germs Steel: A Short History of Everybody for the Last 13,000 Years. Vintage Books, 1997. The names here are reversed so that sources can be listed alphabetically by author surname. If a book written by more than one person, you only need to reverse the first authorââ¬â¢s names. When citing multiple books by the same author, order them alphabetically by title, but only give the authorââ¬â¢s names for the first entry, using three hyphens and a period for subsequent sources: Diamond, Jared. Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed. Penguin, 2006. -. Guns, Germs Steel: A Short History of Everybody for the Last 13,000 Years. Vintage Books, 1997.

The debts deal's failure by Fareed Zakaria Essay
The debts deal's failure by Fareed Zakaria - Essay Example The paper tells that one must note before reading the aforementioned article that Mr. Fareed Zakaria is not your run of the mill reporter, observer, or opinion columnist. He is a highly regarded member of the journalistic field whose credentials include being the host of CNN's Fareed Zakaria, editor at large of Time Magazine, an all too important columnist of The Washington Post, and author of such famous works as The Post American World and The Future of Freedom. Mr. Zakaria started off his argumentative essay by presenting the facts as he knew them to be true to his readers. The information that he presented, about the filibustering in the legislative house and the constant bickering between the Republican and Democratic parties on the floor was information that could easily be gleaned from reading the newspapers or watching the daily news shows. The information that our debt ceiling was being held hostage by politics was something that came as surprisingly new for most of us. Main ly because we had always been used to seeing these two parties managing to find some middle ground within which to work from for the benefit of many. Sadly, it seems that the era of old, open communication, and amicable settlement politics is now an era of the past. These days, our national politics is, according to Zakaria has become a world wide failure because we can no longer make our political system work for ourselves. He continues to explain how our debt crisis would have been solved during the time of Reagan, Clinton and other previous American leaders: This is how Congress used to work: grand bipartisan bargains to solve difficult problems with compromises by both sides. This is not nostalgia. It is how the system worked in the 1980s and '90s to save Social Security, reform the tax code, rationalize immigration policy and close hundreds of military bases. (Zakaria, Fareed, The Debt Deal's Failure) Mr. Fareed does his utmost best within the article in order to present even t he most complicated of economic discussions in terms that lay people such are ourselves can easily understand. He has a grasp of the current economic situation that allows him to present a highly readable and focused piece that in the end, allows the reader to contemplate the reality of our economic situation locally and its effects on our nation worldwide. That is not an easy task for somebody as highly educated as Mr. Fareed and yet he manages to pull it off with each written paragraph in his commentary. He does not try to sway his reader towards one politicial inclination or another, he merely provides all of the information that he has on hand to help his reader come to certain conclusions on his own. The Debt Deal's Failure (Zakaria, Time Magazine) does its best to present an unbiased opinion on the topic. It however, fails dismally in that aspect because Mr. Zakaria makes it very clear from the get go that he is a firm believer in the economic programs of the Democrats and tha t the Republicans should be viewed as the bad guys who ran our economy into the ground. He often does argumentative analysis of the performance of the presidents Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and finally Barack Obama in relation to increasing our countries debt woes. I find it quite disturbing that he was able to present factual data on the spending and borrowing for the Republican presidents but then failed to do the same for the Democrat president. It is highly impossible that our debt managed to balloon into the

US Department of Defense moves to Cloud Computing Research Paper
US Department of Defense moves to Cloud Computing - Research Paper Example In each era, many researchers have carried out a lot of research to discover latest technologies that can facilitate humans in their daily tasks however in this age we can see this idea as a real implementation in the form of cloud computing. Basically, cloud computing is the latest technology model offering on-demand ICT network access to more reliable and efficient information technology services and devices (for example storage, servers and a wide variety of software applications). Cloud computing technology based arrangement puts together a network of computing resources that can be accessed anywhere, being shared between its clients. In view of the fact that in the present always changing financial, political and technological landscape, IT is predictable to offer widespread and ever growing potentials by making use of minimum resources. In this scenario, by keeping in mind the growth of both cyber threats and state sponsored, the DoD (Department of Defense) has started identifying the rising significance of leading safe and powerful adoption of cyberspace. In the same way, worldwide economic events are driving the need for sustained budgetary restrictions and stricter economical oversight. Hence, the Department of Defense has to change the method and approach through which it performs its operations and manages its information technology department in an attempt to identify augmented competence, efficiency, and safety. Ã The US Department of Defense has decided to move to Cloud Computing. This paper outlines some of the major reasons and strategies behind the adoption of cloud computing architecture. This research will also assess some of the major causes those derived DoD to adopt cloud computing. Introduction Cloud computing technology based arrangement is currently delivering computing arrangement, software on-demand and services with the network. This technology based arrangement also presents smart benefits to the private and public sector organizations. For instance, it has the power to minimize ICT costs by virtualizing economic assets similar to disk storage and processing cycles into a voluntarily accessible, reasonable functional expenditure. Additionally, a large number of private and public sector organizations have made initial progresses with the cloud computing technology application. For instance, in US Washington, DC, all the 38,000 city administrative staff members have limitle ss access to Google services and documents for example Gmail. The United States General Services Administration recently publicized that they are moving the nationwide portal usa.gov to the cloud and offered an RFI for cloud technology based structure services (Craig, et al., 2009; Chandrasekaran & Kapoor, 2010). In addition, cloud computing definitely appears to be the expression du-jour in the computing world nowadays. In fact, the majority of researchers and IT experts believe that cloud computing will be turned
Assignment 2 - Differentiating age changes from pathological changes
2 - Differentiating age changes from pathological changes - Assignment Example It also causes profuse sweating, increased breathing and pulse rate (Nadel, 2008). A bluish colour may appear in the lips and nails due to the reduce oxygen in the blood. This causes confused and delirious mental state to the patient. Coughs- this because of reduced output of the respiratory system causing abnormal respiratory responses. This is because chest bones become thinner which causes a shape change of the ribcage. Thus the ribcage expands less during breathing. This can also be attributed to changes in the immune system thus the lungs recover less from exposure to harmful particles (Cook, Zumla, A & Manson, 2009). Chills- metabolism becomes slower as one ages therefore heat generation by the body is low thus muscles have to provide alternative means to generate heat. This reduction in metabolism is due to the thyroid becoming lumpy thus affecting the production of hormones that are responsible for metabolism. Shortness of breath and tiredness- as one grows older; muscles that support the diaphragm are weakened. This causes the airways to lose their ability of keeping the airways open. Causing them to close easily. This can be attributed to loss of shape and bagginess of the alveoli. All these changes in lung tissue causes air to get trapped in the lungs thus not enough oxygen reaches the capillaries. Removal of carbon IV oxide is reduced making breathing hard. Headache ââ¬â headaches maybe more frequent as one ages because of a number of reasons. One is that due to reduction in blood pressure that can prevent enough blood reaching the brain thus causing dehydration of brain cells causing minor headaches and light headiness. Drop in blood pressure can occur also due to the reduction in aldosterone hormone which in turn can indirectly or directly cause headaches. Fatigue ââ¬â can be caused by the various factors. One key factor is the reduction of central nervous system functionality. This can also be attributed to reduced metabolism and

Texan Foods is a company founded and based in Texas, near Amarillo. Born in the year 1941, this company has grown from strength to strength to consolidate its standing as one of the best gourmet chain which specialises in grocery products. Their line of products includes croissants, English muffins as well as exotic sandwich breads, buns and other baked goods like tortillas. Besides being a household name by the mid 90s with ample support from a former oil businessman, R.L (Buddy) Howlett, who was its founder and a successful entrepreneur, this company had come to employ a major supplier who went by name of Valley. (Autry, 2005)2 As a big manufacturing company, it has been demonstrated that Texan has a very poor system of supply chain management as far as its model of collaboration, planning, forecasting and replenishment (CPFR), is concerned. To start with, let us describe the exact nuances of supply chain management, in context of the CPFR model. Supply chain management (SCM) may be defined as that sphere of activities that takes place in context of planning, implementing, and controlling the operations. These operations or activities, in turn, are connected with the management of the supply chain so as to effectively cater to the requirements of the customer and gain complete satisfaction of the same through a focus on optimum ulisation of resources. (Atlekar, 2005)3 In this regard, supply chain management deals with all activities pertaining to the mobilisation, storage as well as an account of the semi finished and finished products that are of value to the end user. (Hugos, 2005)4 In this context, various scholars have also refered to this form and area of management as logistics as it connects the quantitative areas of assessment with the qualitative goal achievement progress of the organisation. These areas have been assessed in Texan, through inputs from two officials who are connected with the operational realities of the supply chain management system followed at Texan. Paper on The Blue Hotel Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Paper on The Blue Hotel - Essay Example In this story by Stephen Crane the theme of conflicts scores over other themes. The conflicts relate to Swede and societal reaction to his self-destructive individuality. The detailing of the theme reveals how Crane challenged such situations. Letââ¬â¢s take the example of Swedeââ¬â¢s disposition to life. He strongly feels that everyone in the Blue Hotel wants to kill him. His fear is unfounded and no backgrounder information is provided or logic is given for the lurking fear in his mind. This indicates that conflict is the inherent part of his personality and that is the reason for him to surmise that those in the hotel are angry with him and they want to kill him. Even if it is assumed that he is paranoid being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, why the thought of killing only should float in his mind. This indicates the basic self-destructive behavior of Swede. Next, Swede picks up a fight with Johnny. The first phase of violence doesnââ¬â¢t produce any tangible res ults, and his second bout of aggression after he defeats Johnny in the fight, takes him to death. In a fight this time with a gambler, Swede is stabbed to death. This is a pointer, according to Crane, the things to happen when humankind as a whole takes to self-destruction, inviting disaster that will ultimately lead to total annihilation of the human race itself. Nature will not target human race alone in isolation for destruction. Plant and animal kingdoms also will perish to a great extent. The author of any novel/story, howsoever intelligently may try to sweep under the carpet events related to his life, will reveal something about oneââ¬â¢s own psychology and attitudes to life, through the dialogues, and actions of his characters. This is true of Stephen Crane (1871-1900). He died at the age of 28 and thus he belongs to the younger generation, which is combustible. The grinding poverty he suffered all through his adult life and his poor standard of living has something to do with his arrogant social disposition. Added to the problem, he had a poor health record, suffered from tuberculosis, and contacted malaria and failed to take proper care of himself. Not caring for oneââ¬â¢s health is again an act of self-destruction and that attitude has to find expression is his literary works and the same has happened in this story through the character of Swede. Did he feel isolated from the society and his surroundings? It must be so as reflected in his disposition. He acted like a rebel against all the established societal norms while interacting in a group. Swede seems to have the permanent grudge against the society and it is revealed in his small and big actions, right from his induction into the plot of the story. That grudge is the root-cause of his self-destructive behaviour. The group referred to in the Blue Hotel is a miniature model of the society and Swede picks up serious quarrels with those present there on one issue or the other. He creates iss ues out of no issues. He seems to have formed certain fixed negative opinions about the society. The reasons could be his upbringing and the adverse circumstances that he had to face early on in life. Nature seems to read the dormant agitations in his mind and as he arrives at the Palace Hotel along with two others, a blizzard develops and everyone stands isolated at the hotel. In the blizzard normal vision is impaired, one cannot see the surroundings properly, and Crane has used the

Qualifying Exam Practice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Qualifying Exam Practice - Essay Example Recently, some certain theorists made focus upon the vast stands of the opposing paradigms in the ultimate pursuance of theoretical clarity in this matter of voter legislation. Nonetheless, it now appears as if it is a renewed matter in integrating and infusing social theories towards a more known and balanced paradigm (Bell, 1992). The article of voter legislation woes, does review some of these considerations that should be highlighted by the parliament, and hence encourage further inquiry and progression into the social theory models, especially as they link to the conflict in question, and its resolution application both locally and internationally. Moreover, certain key concepts would be proposed as a continuous step toward attaining this objective in the United States of America. The initial step relates to a theoretical widening of C. Wrightââ¬â¢s concept of sociological imagination. The second step is postulated by George Ritzerââ¬â¢s interest in meta-theories and it ex plains the infusion of ideas from his Major levels of social analysis model. The last one concerns the exploration of new dimensions and entails the dynamics of the social cubism model by Sean (Bew, 1990). With the fall of communism and the Cold war geo[[political order, three interlinked tendencies surface namely, the growing disempowerment of ideologies based on modern rationality, the formation of a new transnational order with an integrated financial mechanism, standards and measures of production and consumption, and the relative fall of the centralized nation state, and modern territorial sovereignty. When viewed critically, all these had an effect on the current voter identification legislation issue of the United States of America. The rise of ethno political conflicts can be shaped by both indigenous aspects and global limitations. Levels of communal linkages shape such conflicts. For ethno political conflicts, both the relations and the international system that occur amon g the nations states must be taken into consideration. In the international system, the circulation of capital, ideologies, and the use of certain crucial powers affect the rise of conflict between and within states (Bell, 1992). The importance of micro-national problems state that structures brought ethno political conflict leading to micro and macro tensions and issues of stalemates. The state can be considered to be losing some aspects of its original power of a self-identity by itself, which is a common, and a self-governing legitimacy. Social and class identities, can be replaced in some scenarios with ethnic, religious, and affiliations having territorial origin. Moreover, the new identities try to portray self-determination, appreciate group definitions and norms, and bring about ethno territorial mobilization, ethno political issues, fragmenting of the state, and not forgetting regionalism around the globe. Globalization works to enforce these local certainties and relations hips in response to the economic identity created by the world markets in the transnational order (Bew, 1992). Nowadays, research on ethno territorial politics typically examines politics, and not forgetting economic structures, so as to emphasize the competing interests of groups, or tend to utilize a psychoanalytic method to emphasize the aspect of both cultural and psychological

Undertake a brief SWOT for Intel Essay Example for Free
Undertake a brief SWOT for Intel Essay Reading summary At the beginning, Intel had no distinguished trademark Intel launched the ââ¬Å"Intel insideâ⬠campaign to build brand awareness of their microprocessors, which has their brand kept in mind by consumers. (Intel logo) The success of bunny people series ââ¬â a successful marketing campaign in 1990 2003, Centino includes new micro processor, extended battery life and wireless features. Using Media. In mid 2000s, although PC industries went down, Intel focused on new opportunities fto seek a new growth in home entertainment and mobile phones. Brainy ââ¬Å"microprocessor companyâ⬠was repositioned to ââ¬Å"warm and fuzzy companyâ⬠. Slogan ââ¬Å"Leap aheadâ⬠replaced ââ¬Å"Intel insideâ⬠. New Logo was created. Continue to be microprocessor-focused. Questions 1. Undertake a brief SWOT for Intel. Strength Intel has a large market share and it adds much value to its brand. Besides, Intel has their loyal customers throughout the world, most people are familiar with the brand of Intel. It can be discerned that the success of Intelââ¬â¢s microprocessor is due to its powerful team of RD. Weaknesses To some extent, Intel focused too much on PC, ignoring the mobile market, which is considered as a promising field. Opportunities As can be seen, Intel kept customers as their first preference and made changes on regular basis to meet their usersââ¬â¢ needs. Threats Today, customer taste changes a lot, and their preferences might shift to the other competitive products easily given that they do not get what they need. Their threats also come from other strong competitors, such as Dell and IBM etc. 2. What growth strategies should Intel pursue based on information from the case? I think Intel could focus on laptop market, because the design of thinner and lighter laptops has been the trend. Intel could take the advantage of their microprocessor technology to expand their laptop market.

Project management synopsis
Project management synopsis Project management ensures that project requirements are met by applying tools, techniques, skills, and knowledge to project activities (or tasks). The fundamental structure of project management is defined by the project stakeholders, which are project sponsor, project team, suppliers, support staff, customers, and users. Other fundamental areas of project management are project management tools and techniques, and project management knowledge areas project integration, scope, time, cost, quality, human resource, communication, procurement and risk management. However, of these knowledge areas the project integration management is most critical because it integrates all other areas of project management. Although, project management primarily ensures that a projects requirements are met by applying tools, technique, skills, and knowledge to project activities (tasks) to meet project requirements, it is also is a group of interrelated processes: initiating, planning, executing and monitoring. Of these three processes, the executing processes require more time and resources, followed by the planning processes. A broader picture of the activities involved in project management is seen in mapping the activities of the process group into the [nine] project areas. Since it is critical for project management to meet project requirements [goals], and satisfy stakeholders, it is equally critical for project managers to identify, understand, and manage relationships with all project stakeholders. Also for a project management to meet requirements, and satisfy stakeholders, project must have a project plan. This project plan must define and confirm project goals and objective, identify tasks and how goals are accomplished, quantify needed resources, determine project cost [budget] and project completion timelines. Apart from defining and confirming project goals, the project plan entails the management and implementation of the project plan, change control operations, ensuring communication of accurate and objective performance information during project life cycle (or phase), and project failure recovery mechanisms where necessary. The concept of triple constraint is very critical to the successful completion or execution of a project. For a project manager to successfully execute a project, by managing triple constraint, the project manager must be able to balance these constraints [goals] scope, time, and cost. Since [most] projects involve changes and balance between these competing goals scope, time, and cost it is very critical for project managers to have strong coping skills. Another important factor in project is quality. Since customers satisfaction invariably depends on the quality standards of a product, it is therefore important for the project manager to consider quality as an added element to the elements of the triple constraints scope, time, and cost when embarking on a project. A successful project manager must simultaneously and effectively manage these four basic interrelated elements -scope, time, cost and quality knowing that quality is an inseparable part in setting the scope, time a nd cost of a project. In order for any project to address all the tasks required to complete the project successfully, the project scope management, which is a critical part of project management, must include processes scope planning, WBS creation, scope definition, scope control and scope verification required to address and accomplish such tasks. Since one of the key reasons why project fail is scope management, it is, therefore, important for a project scope management to have a clear statement, showing project requirements; scope change management, and user involvement. Because most [information] projects do not meet their project time estimates, manage and track the way project activities (or tasks) are scheduled in order to meet project expectations. Project time management is a critical aspect of project management that involves processes activity definition, activity resource estimating, activity duration estimating, activity sequencing, schedule development, and schedule control which are critical to the management of projects in order to meet project schedule, which in turn guarantees a project would stay within the project budget. Cost management is another important and inseparable part of project management. Because cost management is to the effective cost management, project managers must take responsibility of understanding how basic cost concepts, cost control, budgeting and cost estimate are critical to a successful execution of a project (or project phase). Because the quality of a project invariably affects stakeholders satisfaction, it is very critical that project quality management, which involves quality assurance, quality control, and quality planning, is taken very seriously. However, in maintaining quality standard that would satisfy stakeholders needs, that project must conform to specified project requirements, and making sure items (deliverables) that meet such project requirements are delivered. With quality control and planning, specific project results are monitored to ensure that such results conforms to quality standards, and quality standards pertaining to the project are identified and satisfied. Since people are the most valuable assets in any project, it is very important that these assets [people] that are involved in a project are properly managed. Human resource management, which embraces all stakeholders, is a very important part of project management since it directly affects how these resources [people] perform to attain project objectives. When resources are well managed, project responsibilities, roles, and relationships are identified; the personnel needed to work on a given project are assigned to the project; individuals and groups are trained on project management skills to enhance project performance; and project team members performance is tracked, and conflicts and issues are resolved. The importance of communication cannot be undermined when managing projects. Communication is the platform on which any project runs. The failure or success of a project depends on the way all key elements of a project communicate information about that project to each other. With effective project management, which involves information distribution, stakeholder management, communication planning, and performance report, a project manager is able to manage the team members and communicate well with other key elements in a project. Also, with effective communication [interface] management, whereby reports and status updates, changes, and other project issues, that could affect the execution of a project are communicated to the appropriate personnel in a timely manner, project objectives (or goals) would be achieved. However, project managers and team members must understand the importance of creating a good working relationship as project information is communicated. Since the number of communication channels increase with increase in number of people that need to communicate, it is very critical that project managers must develop a good communication and conflict management skills. Like communication, resource, scope, time, cost, risk management is very critical to a successful execution of a project. Since risk management is a process in which what may impact a project negatively or positively, it is important that the project manager has appropriate risk plan in place. With the risk plan, approaches and plans for risk management activities for a particular project are decided. The processes involved in risk management are risk monitoring and control, risk identification, risk management planning, quantitative risk analysis, and qualitative risk analysis. Procurement, which is the aspects of project management that involves obtaining goods and services from outside source or company, includes processes planning purchases and acquisitions, requesting sellers responses, planning contracting, select sellers, administering contracts, and closing contracts that are very important to the health of any project. Plan purchases and acquisitions involves a process whereby items to purchase for a project and when needed is determined. In planning purchases and acquisition, the project manager should be involved since the project manager is practically acquainted with what would be needed for the project. However, in requesting seller responses, list of vendors to consider are identified, and information about their capabilities and prices through vendor proposals and price quotes are received. The list is further narrowed down to a list of companies that meet certain criteria. Plan contracting is another process that involves creating products and services requirements. These products and services are those that are needed for a project execution. The companies or suppliers that would supply these product and services must be identified. Select seller is the process that involves choosing the vendor that meets the criteria set by the company for a particular project. The chosen vendor would provide the product or service that is required for the project. Contract administration is the process that involves managing the relationship with the contracted company. The project manager must work with the vendor, writing and administering the contract, bearing in mind the legal consequences that could occur he does not understand the contract. Contract closure is the process that involves the completion and settlement of all contracts that existed during the project life cycle. The project manager and project team will be involved to ensure the completion of the contracted work and to gather lesson learned during the procurement process. As an IT professional, project management is very critical for IT project execution or completion. The lesson learned from this class is one that would be applied in my future work environment. Planning a project is not for a project manager alone. There are team members, like me, that would be involved in projects that would require me to show what I have learned over the course of this class. I should be able to contribute to the success of any project for which I would be a project team member. Knowing the project knowledge areas and process groups; applying the various project inputs, and adhering to the professional ethical code of conduct, would guarantee a litigation-free and successful project execution.

How Safe Are Mobile Phones? :: essays research papers fc
Millions of people own a mobile phone these days, and ever since they have been around scientists question the fact of they are safe or not. Do they cause tumors, earaches, mercury poisoning? All these health risks are mentioned in every article I found. But nowhere could I find anything that was sure if mobiles did cause all of the above. This is where science fails us. The problem is that mobile phones are still too new to know the long-term effects on human. Mobile phones give of a radiation of radio frequency round 10MHz to 300Ghz. But so do other appliances. Why does mobiles especially get put in the picture of being hazardous? Soon it will be clear whether the radio frequency emissions from mobiles cause health effect. Drivers who use there mobiles whilst driving are the only ââ¬Å"health riskâ⬠that can be proven, the drivers get distracted and lose control over the vehicle. Technology invented something for this, hands-free sets. But now the question is do those hands free sets really solve the problem? Researchers now are looking at if the hands free sets donââ¬â¢t cause other problems. A report from the magazine ââ¬Å"which?â⬠said that hands free kits raised levels if radiation to the head from mobile phones by up to three and a half times. The consumer association immediately stressed that it had done no research into this whether this radiation could cause damage to the brain. That just proves that whenever there has been research a report is released to prove that research wrong. Probably is done not to cause any chaos. Mobiles are said to cause brain tumors, they say this because there was found to be more tumors of the same kind amongst mobile phone users. Mobiles cause memory loss, radiation sickness. Mobiles can disturb your sleep pattern, according to the researchers from the university of Zurich, mobile phones increases brain activity during our sleep. A really strange result of the use of mobile phones is that mobile phones can release the poisonous mercury from fillings causing brain damage, scientist say this is due to the electrical fields given off by mobile phones can activate the mercury, giving off a gas. The fumes attach the nervous system causing conditions from depression, asthma to Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease and multiple sclerosis. Some studies have suggested links between Radio frequency radiation and lymphoma, microwaves and memory loss, mobile phone use and a rare type of brain cancer, mobile phone radiation and DNA destruction, and mobile phone use and damaged scalp nerves

Jonathan Glover Essay
Jonathan Glover (born 1941) is a British philosopher known for his studies on ethics. He was educated at Tonbridge School, later going on to Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He was a fellow and tutor in philosophy at New College, Oxford. He currently teaches ethics at Kingââ¬â¢s College London. Glover is a fellow of the Hastings Center, an independent bioethics research institution in the United States. Gloverââ¬â¢s book Causing Death and Saving Lives, first published in 1977, addresses practical moral questions about life and death decisions in the areas of abortion, infanticide, suicide, euthanasia, choices between people, capital punishment, and war. His approach is broadly consequentialist, though he gives significant weight to questions of individual autonomy, the Kantian notion that we ought to treat other people as ends in themselves rather than merely as means. He criticises the idea that mere consciousness or life itself are intrinsically valuable: these states matter, he argues, because they are pre-requisites for other things that are valuable and make for a life worth living. There is, then, no absolute sanctity of human life. [1] He criticises the principle of double effect[2] and the acts and omissions doctrine,[3] the notion that there is a huge moral difference between killing someone and intentionally letting them die. In his discussion of real cases of moral decisions about killing he draws on insights from history and literature as well as philosophy. Throughout, the emphasis is on the consequences of moral choices for those affected, rather than on abstract principles applied impersonally. In Humanity: A Moral History of the Twentieth Century, published in 1999, Glover considers the psychological factors that predispose us to commit barbaric acts, and suggests how man-made moral traditions and the cultivation of moral imagination can work to restrain us from a ruthlessly selfish treatment of others. Gaining greater understanding of the monsters within us, he argues, is part of the process of caging and containing them. [4] He examines the various types of atrocity that were perpetrated in the 20th century, including Nazi genocide, communist mass killings under Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot, and more recent slaughter in Bosnia and Rwanda, and examines what sort of bulwarks there could be against them. He allows that religion has provided bulwarks, which are getting eroded. He identifies three types of bulwark. The two more dependable are sympathy and respect for human dignity. The less dependable third is Moral Identity: ââ¬Å"I belong to a kind of person who would not do that sort of thingâ⬠. This third is less dependable because notions of moral identity can themselves be warped, as was done by the Nazis. [5] In The End of Faith, Sam Harris quotes Glover as saying: ââ¬Å"Our entanglements with people close to us erode simple self-interest. Husbands, wives, lovers, parents, children and friends all blur the boundaries of selfish concern. Francis Bacon rightly said that people with children have given hostages to fortune. Inescapably, other forms of friendship and love hold us hostage tooâ⬠¦ Narrow self-interest is destabilized. ââ¬Å"[citation needed] In 1989 the European Commission hired Glover to head a panel on embryo research in Europe. [6] He is married to Vivette Glover, a prominent neuroscientist. Jonathan is father to three and grandfather to one (father to Ruth, Daniel and David Glover and grandfather to Samuel Glover).

Explore the similarities and differences between the three examples of speech Essay
Explore the similarities and differences between the three examples of speech, including a consideration of the different contexts in which the texts were produced and how the speakers convey attitudes and values. Text A was both published and delivered by David Lloyd George as a speech in 1914. ââ¬ËThe great pinnacle of sacrificeââ¬â¢ is a text of persuasion in support of the war. It does not have the benefit of hindsight that we have today, which allows us to establish a context an audience of 1914 would not have been able to do. Lloyd George opens with the concrete noun ââ¬Å"The peopleâ⬠, this puts everyone into a metaphorical firing line, underlining the purpose that everyone will benefit from going to war. ââ¬Å"Great menaceâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Freedomâ⬠are superlative noun phrases that are juxtaposed to reinforce the opinion that by going to war all unpleasant necessities will be avoided. Lloyd George uses the declarative ââ¬Å"That is not allâ⬠; this emphatic, simple sentence shows he doesnââ¬â¢t allow room for interpretation, which is typical of political speech. He uses the collocation ââ¬Å"newâ⬠and ââ¬Å"oldâ⬠in an attempt to rank all members of society together as an act of capturing this equal status. He continues with the comparative adjectives ââ¬Å"richer/noblerâ⬠suggesting how life could be as a result, making the future seem rosy. Lloyd George refers to imagery taken from the Bible ââ¬Å"Great food of luxuryâ⬠. He uses this metaphor to explain something complicated. By evoking this biblical imagery of ââ¬Ëgoodââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëbadââ¬â¢ he is making use of intertextuality to reach the audience on a higher emotional level that his expression alone could never master. David Lloyd George continues to raise hopes and ideas of the future by using the inclusive modal verb ââ¬Å"we can seeâ⬠; this is clearly an indication of him trying to heighten hope in the situation with talk of new possibilities. Again he uses a modal verb ââ¬Å"Mayâ⬠, this politeness marker allows him to gain encouragement through civility. This passive form of verbs makes the audience realise itââ¬â¢s their responsibility. He reinforces this action with the repetition of ââ¬Å"tooâ⬠, how far Britain has let things slip, not concentrating on wider things. He also continues with the religious lexis by incorporating a parable into his speech. This gives a higher prominence to the speech by creating a gentle atmosphere. Lloyd George successfully reinforces his discourse with this illustrated spiritual truth, allowing him to justify his words, as if itââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËGodââ¬â¢s Willââ¬â¢. He then renders a personal feel to the piece by using concrete nouns ââ¬Å"mountainâ⬠ââ¬Å"seaâ⬠for the audience to crate a visual atmosphere; ââ¬Å"beautiful valleyâ⬠he is referring to Britain metaphorically, underpinning the fact that we should not turn a blind eye. ââ¬Å"Handâ⬠, they will be cleansed of all bad things at the time. The images following this is vital to David Lloyd Georgeââ¬â¢s speech, his use of informal words, sentences, convergence results in bringing them closer together makes him, his speech and ultimately the war seem less intimidating. The audience is a variety of social classes, certainly adults and David Lloyd Georgeââ¬â¢s use of the polysyllabic lexis towards the end creates his intended aim. The use of pre-modifiers and superlatives create a sense of euphoria, he is using them to rouse people up. He does not hide the fact that people are going to die, but he covers it up by calling it a sacrifice, this is one of many euphemisms he uses to create passion and intensity in his speech. Towards the end his innotation and stressed syllables becomes more frequent and his passion increases. His speech is obviously non-spontaneous, there are no non-fluency features, which is typical of political speech. He needs to achieve maximum effect through his language, therefore there is no room for mistakes. There are stages that his language goes through. Abstract nouns start the speech with a form of negativity, which progresses to end on a positive note. From ââ¬Å"struggleâ⬠to ââ¬Å"honourâ⬠and ââ¬Å"gloryâ⬠. It therefore succeeds in its purpose to inspire. Text B is from the final episode of the comedy series ââ¬ËBlackadder Goes Forthââ¬â¢. Scene two: The Dug-Out contains the three main characters of the series; Blackadder, George and Baldrick, whose status is in the same order. They each successfully create black humour towards the satire of the piece, reinforcing itââ¬â¢s main purpose to entertain. The audience would have been expected to have prior knowledge to the screening of Blackadder in 1992. Their familiarity with the Thatcher situation of the 1982 Falklands War allows them hindsight to the broadcasting of the programme; Giving the audience the opportunity to enjoy the black comedy. The extract opens with spoken language and the manner is both formal and informal. The informality is marked by the co-ordianting conjunctions in Baldrickââ¬â¢s speech; ââ¬Å"Soâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Andâ⬠, he is topic linking. Plus his repetition of ââ¬Å"Right?â⬠creates a sense of understanding. His phatic /child-like language is a satirical point that Baldrick doesnââ¬â¢t understand what is happening (the war). The formality of the text is indicated through the military lexis, Baldrickââ¬â¢s utterance; ââ¬Å"Permission to ask a question, sirâ⬠The vocative again consolidates the fact that Baldrick is the inferior character. The field specific lexis allows us an insight to the visual aspect of the situation; ââ¬Å"war startedâ⬠, ââ¬Å"shotâ⬠ââ¬Å"historyâ⬠ââ¬Å"preventâ⬠. There is a great deal of uncertainty in their speech; ââ¬Å"isnââ¬â¢t it?â⬠ââ¬Å"right?â⬠ââ¬Å"wellâ⬠these interrogatives again mirror how peo ple in their position would have felt: confused. The context is juxtaposed for the affect of the audience. The comedy value is played against the military content of the scene. Status plays a big part in this as Blackadderââ¬â¢s superiority enables him to act sarcastically and be exceedingly patronising towards George: ââ¬Å"George, I hardly think we can be entirely absolved from blame on the imperialistic front.â⬠His relaxed innotaion is highly demeaning, he wants to deflate George to reinforce his position of superiority. His inferior/ sarcastic humour is used best with George through the hyperbole ââ¬Å"(small) sausageâ⬠, the emphasis placed on the alliteration also adds to the comedy. When speaking to Baldrick his patronising attitude is less abrupt, he somewhat creates a father/son relationship; ââ¬Å"Well possiblyâ⬠the convergence shows that Blackadder is making the distance smaller between them by letting Baldrick down gently, this also creates a teacher/pupil relationship, Blackadder sees himself as an educator, maybe this is an easier option. Blackadderââ¬â¢s paralinguistic features show how he treats Baldrick with contempt: ââ¬Å"As long as it isnââ¬â¢t the one about where babies come from.â⬠This is humorous, but also making a veiled connotation to Baldrickââ¬â¢s intelligence (maturity-childlike). Blackadder is de-meaning him for his audience. Whichever way Blackadder places his patronising attitude whether it is tentative or demeaning he his only after his official goal; to obtain and prove his superior rank to the audience. Baldrickââ¬â¢s total lack of understanding and through his connective declarative; ââ¬Å"So, the poor old ostrich died for nothingâ⬠proves he has learned nothing and produces a more comical affect as his statement is not connected at all to Georgeââ¬â¢s last utterance. George uses fairly racist, harsh language; pre-modifier ââ¬Å"vileâ⬠, which British soldiers would have used at the time and the fact that he is totally un-shocked by Blackadderââ¬â¢s expletive language ââ¬Å"It was bollocksâ⬠(which would have shocked audiences at the time) allows us to feel a slight pity towards his passion in his order in rank. Georgeââ¬â¢s patrism makes a slight insight to his idiotism; ââ¬Å"Henry VIII and his Six Knivesâ⬠. The fact that these three characters with their different status in society have been stuck together for a long time creates the humorous content needed to steer clear of the harsh reality of a War, I feel itââ¬â¢s main purpose is therefore to entertain. Text C is an extract of spoken language and the manner is formal as it is three educators discussing the affects of both WWI and II. The formality is marked through the subject specific lexis; ââ¬Å"â⬠Second world warâ⬠ââ¬Å"first world warâ⬠ââ¬Å"Germanâ⬠ââ¬Å"Hitlerâ⬠. On the contrary the extract does not contain a title or specific names this suggests a familiarity between the speakers, highlighting an informal manner on the conversation. The conversation revolves around turn taking and object of male and female roles is then looked at in greater depth. MP initiates the conversation; ââ¬Å"it seems to meâ⬠the use of the first person pronoun suggests his need to express his opinion first. JD corrects MP throughout the conversation and dominates him with his knowledge and understanding of the subject. This is expected as JD majors in History. MPââ¬â¢s use of fillers; ââ¬Å"umâ⬠and one-second pauses prove his speech to be less detailed than JD, due to his lack in subject knowledge. MPââ¬â¢s repetition; ââ¬Å"imponderables (.) Um (.) vague imponderablesâ⬠is very characteristic of a spontaneous conversation and this is reinforced by his nature to interrupt. LT, being the only female turn taker, is slightly mistreated as her turns are rather like interruptions or comments. However she does disrupt the male on male battle by responding and supporting her opinion, ultimately for the affect to assert her inferiority. ââ¬Å"Opposed to you knowâ⬠, nevertheless her informal utterance indicates her lack of confidence suggesting she does need reassurance, which may be true of ââ¬Ëtypical women in conversationââ¬â¢. The extract is very much Fact versus Opinion. JD is the biggest turn-taker as he is the more confident speaker in subject knowledge. Unlike MP his long utterance clearly has strong opinions, but he uses fact. Emphasis in JDââ¬â¢s long utterance is always words that explain ideas, suggesting he is used to explaining concepts, reinforcing his ability as a teacher. This is true for all three speakers, as the piece does not contain many informal remarks, suggesting their ability to talk passionately about a topic. ââ¬Å"Was about 1911, 1912 when they had some crises with the British and French to 1918â⬠, JDââ¬â¢s complex use of figures stress the fact that his points are substantial however MP overlaps his turn, signifying him as the principal speaker. MPââ¬â¢s overlap occurs due to a male on male debate, they are both competing for talk-time, in spite of this JDââ¬â¢s complex and detailed utterances indicate his own passionate attitude reinforcing his position as the dominant speaker. Thomas completes JDââ¬â¢s sentence, again suggesting a familiarity; ââ¬Å"it just provided them with the opportunity didnââ¬â¢t itâ⬠. The topic loop forms closeness between them rather than a form of ignorance that can be shown between both male speakers. LTââ¬â¢s inferior position is again obtained through her use of a rhetorical interrogative. It is a tag question, not only proving her lack of confidence but also accentuating a stereotype of war and men. From this extract it is shown to be true that men speak more in groups then women, although all speakers have the ability of hindsight. The purpose I feel is highly informational, and the ideas raised prove it is a conversation of opinions, thus status. Both Blackadder and Teacher Speech create a formal and informal manner. Their informality is marked through the familiarity between characters; Baldrick and Blackadder (father/son relationship) and teachers; LT and JD (use of topic loops). Baldrickââ¬â¢s informal manner may be related to the audience of David Lloyd Georgeââ¬â¢s speech; the uncertainty in his speech ââ¬Å"isnââ¬â¢t it?â⬠ââ¬Å"right?â⬠mirror how his audience would have felt: confused. Lloyd George uses biblical imagery to his own effect, by the use of a parable he is able to reach his audience on an emotional level, Blackadder and Teacherââ¬â¢s Speech differs, as their field specific lexis is both resting on the military aspect. However, there is a similarity between Lloyd George and Blackadder as they both try to cover up the actual harsh reality or the War; Blackadder ââ¬â through black humour and Lloyd George ââ¬â through biblical language. Teacherââ¬â¢s Speech is very much Fact versus Opinion, this may be said for all three texts. Lloyd George has an ââ¬Å"opinionâ⬠and through his use of concrete nouns ââ¬Å"the peopleâ⬠and religious imagery ââ¬Å"food of luxuryâ⬠he is able to persuade his audience in support of the war. On the contrary, Balckadder uses ââ¬Å"factâ⬠his speech to obtain superiority over the two characters, making his utterances more believable. However George speaks of his ââ¬Å"opinionsâ⬠and his harsh, racial attitude makes seem appear displeasing to an audience of today. However an audience of Lloyd Georgeââ¬â¢s time would have related to his anger. Blackadder uses his knowledge to form a patronising attitude, to ultimately obtain his rightful status, JD in the same way uses his knowledge and understanding of the field specific lexis to obtain his superior status; utterances does not contain many informal remarks suggesting his ability to talk passionately about a topic and finally Lloyd George uses no non-fluency features, typical of political speech in order to raise his status over his audience. The main difference between all three texts is their purpose. I feel this may be because of the dates in which each text was created. David Lloyd George is the earliest of the three and this is not only clear through his strong use of biblical imagery, but his main aim to uplift and ignite positivity in his audience, who do not have the benefit of hindsight. Therefore its purpose is to inspire. Blackadder is next on the time-scale and the audience of 1992 are able to have hindsight and are therefore able to understand the black humour towards the satire of the piece. Hence itââ¬â¢s main purpose to entertain. And finally Teacherââ¬â¢s Speech has an informational purpose, containing ideas and opinions that only the benefit of hindsight would allow us to summon and understand. It is acknowledgeable that through the passing of time, a subject from long ago may still be discussed and has the same ability to cause confusion and passion in the lives of people everywhere. The people of 1914, Lloyd Georgeââ¬â¢s Speech, may have had different views or opinions to an audience of 1992, Blackadder and present day, Teacherââ¬â¢s speech, but the topic of the effects of the War is still as easily roused now as it was then. The people of today are able to obtain the same passion as the people of 1914, seeing that their lives would not be the same if the older generations of their family hadnââ¬â¢t fought so bravely and created that passion to begin with. Time is not an excuse to lose acknowledgement and enthusiasm.

Brief a case Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1
Brief a case - Essay Example At one point the cars pulled up alongside one another and the drivers spoke to each other. A traffic stop involving the Ford discovered cocaine and DeLatorre had been observed driving by the traffic stop twice and slowing down to observe the scene. A search warrant executed on the home uncovered more drug-related evidence. DeLatorre was subsequently arrested and charged with conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine and aiding and abetting possession with intent to distribute. Legal Issues: Delatorre appealed his convictions on the grounds that there was insufficient evidence to substantiate the conviction on each of the counts. In particular, Delatorre argued that the probative value of the evidence against him was outweighed by its prejudicial effect. Delatorre also argued that the trial judge abused the discretion by allowing the prosecutionââ¬â¢s expert witness to give evidence on issues that fell outside of the witnessââ¬â¢s expertise. Legal Reasoning: Referring to the Federal Rules of Evidence, Rule 702, the appellate court ruled that experts may testify to any fact or opinion based on ââ¬Å"specialized knowledge that will assist the trier of fact to understand the evidence or to determine a fact in issueâ⬠provided the expert is ââ¬Å"qualified as an expert by knowledge, skill, experience, training or educationâ⬠(Rule 702). Moreover, if the court errs in determining the expertise of a specific expert witness pursuant to the definition provided in Rule 702, the conviction will not be overturned if the error was harmless (United States v Carrazana, 921 F.2d 1557 (11th Cir. 1991). The expert witness testified to drug language and schemes characteristic of the illegal drug trade. The appellate court ruled that courts have allowed Drug Enforcement Officers to testify as experts relative to drug trades language and schemes. In this case the appellate court was satisfied that the expert witness, as a Drug Enforcement Officer had the necessary

Applauding William Paterson Universitys Concert Performance Essay
Applauding William Paterson Universitys Concert Performance - Essay Example As the schoolââ¬â¢s Concert Band and Wind Ensemble played such favorites as Allegro Giocoso and Folk Song Suite, there were elements of strong orchestral harmony throughout the duration of their performances, which provided a competent musical event. No tangible discrepancies were noticed in relation to keeping up with the conductorââ¬â¢s tempo, suggesting a group which has practiced and rehearsed to remain harmonious. However, the Wind Ensemble appeared struggle through I Am ââ¬â Richard Boysen, Jr. which may have been due to the difficulty of the piece as it is associated with a saxophone player who died in a car accident. The violent clashing of symbols to represent the accidentââ¬â¢s hideous disgrace really emphasized the importance of the contemporary concert piece. Percussion dominated much of this series of performances, which added grandeur and excitement to the music. I have often thought that cymbals are often some of the most important instruments in the conce rt performance, as a slightly off-tempo clash can interrupt the harmony of the music. This performance lacked nothing in relation to maintaining the appropriate pace. Cymbals are used to represent a variety of emotions, perhaps as a stylistic tribute to history or as a remembrance piece to an influential person of interest.
